About us
G & J Barron was established at Pattocks Farm, Chappel in 1943 by George Barron.
In the early years a few bronze turkeys were reared on the farm for local butchers
and markets.
By the mid-fifties the annual flock had switched from the bronze feathered turkeys
to the broader breasted white feathered breeds. Due to the high demand during the
1960’s & 1970’s for quality fresh turkeys the flock grew to over 2000 birds per
year. As well as supplying independent butchers and businesses, farm gate sales
direct to the public were increasing.
By the late 1990’s a few bronze turkeys were reintroduced back in to the flock,
These birds give a slightly more “gamey” flavour and proved very popular, so much
so that they now make up over 25% of the flock.
All the barn reared white and free range bronze turkeys are reared from day old
chicks on our home grown straw. The feed is also produced and milled on the farm
and has no added growth promoters.
Several slow growing breeds of turkeys are reared each year to give a wide variation
of weights. They all reach natural maturity by early December.
The birds are hand plucked on the farm well before Christmas. The meat is hung for
at least 10 days to allow it to develop its extra flavour.
Each turkey is supplied boxed and oven ready with herbs and cooking instructions.
If additional information is required why not phone us or call in. We will be delighted
to speak to you.
